Getting Over Financial Infidelity
The most common money deceptions in financial infidelity are:
• Making secret purchases
• Hiding debts or accounts
• Lying about income
• Draining funds from savings
• Lending money without a partner’s consent.
Getting over financial infidelity can be a challenging process, but it is possible with time and effort. Here are some steps you can take:
Acknowledge the issue: The first step to getting over financial infidelity is to acknowledge that it has happened. Both partners should be honest about what has occurred and how they feel about it.
Communicate: Communication is key to rebuilding trust in a relationship. Discuss the situation with your partner and try to understand why they engaged in financial infidelity. This can help both of you move forward and avoid similar situations in the future.
Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries and expectations around finances moving forward. This could include joint budgets, shared financial goals, and regular check-ins about spending.
Seek outside help: If you're struggling to move past financial infidelity, consider seeking outside help from a financial advisor, therapist, or counselor.
Focus on the future: While it's important to acknowledge what has happened, it's also important to focus on the future. Work together to create a financial plan that aligns with your shared goals and values.
Remember that rebuilding trust takes time and effort, but it is totally possible. The best way to get beyond the infidelity is to open lines of communication and to come up with a money plan. This spending plan should involve a hard look at your revenue and expenses.
Audit your budget and make sure you are tagging and tracking all your spending. Allow your partner to have plenty of input: Nobody wants to be in a relationship where the partner feels like they’re being put on an allowance. Treat everyone like they are adults.
***It’s important to note the difference between financial abuse - which is using money to exert control over another person. That is domestic abuse and should not be tolerated.
