The answer is: kind of, yes.

In medieval and early modern Japan, 男色 (danshoku) referred to male-male romantic and sexual relationships that were often accepted in certain circles, including among samurai, monks, and actors. It existed within a very different social framework than modern ideas of sexuality and identity, and wasn’t necessarily seen as incompatible with marriage or having children.

So while games may exaggerate or play things for comedy or drama, they’re often drawing inspiration from a real historical tradition that many people outside Japan have never heard of.

History is a lot more complicated—and interesting—than we sometimes assume.

Hey Y'all,

Just an update on where things stand for my immigration to Japan later this year. It has been delivered to the Immigration Bureau in Tochigi. According to my father-in-law, per the immigration officer that received my packet, it is still looking like it will be later in the summer when they make a decision.

For now, there is nothing else I can do but wait.

In the meantime, we are still carrying on with classes and other activities here at Simple Gaijin!
