On a hot summer day, Lauren and her husband took their golden retriever, Wally, out for a swim. Wally, wearing his little shark life vest, was happily paddling in circles when something surprising appeared—a woodchuck, bobbing in the water.

Before they could react, the little creature leapt onto Wally’s back.

Many dogs would have barked or shaken the stowaway off, but not Wally. He calmly turned his head, acknowledged his passenger, and swam steadily toward shore. When they reached land, the woodchuck slid off, gave Wally a soft snout-to-snout “goodbye,” and scurried away.

Wally, unfazed, went right back to swimming—because for him, kindness isn’t unusual, it’s just who he is.

That day, on a quiet lake, a dog and a wild woodchuck reminded everyone watching that trust and friendship can bloom in the most unexpected ways.

Leo and Muñeca’s love story began in a circus cage. Forced to perform, they found comfort in each other and stayed inseparable. In 2014, Animal Defenders International rescued them, reuniting the pair after six painful months apart. From then on, they lived side by side in a sanctuary, free at last.

When Muñeca fell ill in 2023, Leo never left her. He guarded her, nudged food toward her, and pressed close as her strength faded. In September, at 19 years old, she passed — with Leo by her side until her final breath.

Now Leo mourns, his roars filled with longing. But his devotion reminds us that true love is not just human — it endures across all living beings.

This is Sparrow, a wild coyote I’ve come to know in the Arizona desert. She is a special girl who often finds me while I’m hiking on the trails and then we walk or rest together for a while. There is a connection between us. She listens to my voice when I talk to her, and I listen when she speaks to me with her beautiful intelligent eyes. I have given her nothing but kindness, and she has given me the incredible gift of trust.

Every living thing has a purpose and the right to be here. Animals are individuals who have intelligence and emotions. They value their lives and the lives of their family, feel joy and pain just as humans do. The world would be a better, kinder place if coyotes and all animals could play, love, and live their lives without the constant threat of human cruelty.
