It spanned two distinct generations, with body styles including sedans, station wagons, and two-door models. The second generation, beginning in 1974, introduced a controversial two-door coupe with highly distinctive, rounded styling. While polarizing, this coupe was the basis for AMC’s brief but successful foray into NASCAR racing with drivers like Mark Donohue and Bobby Allison, who brought the Matador five wins. The four-door Matador sedan was also popular as a police and taxi fleet vehicle during the 1970s. The Matador was one of AMC’s larger offerings, powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines.
