Well, kids like to do things that they enjoy! Infants and toddlers are in an exploratory phase, and these activities create different sensory stimuli that are fun to discover. Maybe they like hearing the blocks clatter on the floor or watching the feather float down from their hand.

Could the answer really be that simple? Yes! But also, no!

💡Yes, it’s fun for them, but there’s another developmental layer to it—infants and toddlers are also experimenting with cause-and-effect learning.

Play is a great way for children to learn “if/then” rationalization, the foundation of cause and effect. When they are knocking over towers, the rationalization is, “if I push this block, then I get to hear a sound I really like!” They are building a sense of self and control while exploring the connection between their actions and emotions, which is a huge development for babies! 👶🧠

This rationalization also extends to relationships and the actions of others around them. Every time you comfort your baby when they are upset, they learn something about your relationship with them. Over time, the rationalization becomes, “if I cry when I am upset, then my parent will hold me, and I will feel better.” Babies come to the powerful realization that you share a safe and secure caregiver-child relationship with them. They are not alone. And they can find comfort in your presence 💞
