You don’t lose your team because you lack strategy.

You lose them because they don’t feel considered.

I remember early in my career, I was focused on outcomes—efficiency, timelines, performance. On paper, everything was structured.

But something felt off.

There was distance. Less engagement. Less ownership.

It wasn’t until I paused and asked myself, “How would I want to be led in this moment?” that things began to shift.

You may assume leadership is about direction.

But people don’t respond to direction alone—they respond to how they experience you.

When leaders overlook the human aspect, teams disengage quietly.

Not out of defiance—but disconnection.

The principle is simple, but often underutilized:

People perform better when they feel understood.

Not managed—understood.

Before your next decision or conversation, pause.

If you were on the receiving end of your leadership… how would it feel?

That answer will tell you more than any strategy.

If slowing down makes you feel unproductive…
this might be something to pay attention to.

I just worked with a client who couldn’t sit still without feeling like he was “falling behind.”

If he wasn’t doing something, fixing something, moving something forward—
it didn’t count.

But at the same time, he noticed he was more anxious.
More on edge.
More irritable with his kids and in his leadership.

Even his body was signaling it—fatigue, lingering cold symptoms—
but he kept pushing through.

What we started to connect was this:

It wasn’t just the workload.
It was the lack of recovery.

When your system stays activated for too long, your tolerance drops.

Small things feel bigger.
Your patience shortens.
You react faster than you intend to.

Not because you lack discipline—
but because you’re running on depletion.

And this is where many high performers get it wrong.

You’ve been taught that rest is optional.
Something you earn after everything is done.

But physiologically, that’s not how it works.

Rest is what allows you to think clearly, respond intentionally, and lead effectively.

Without it, you’re not becoming more productive—
you’re becoming more reactive.

So the shift isn’t about doing less.

It’s about recognizing that short, intentional pauses throughout your day
are part of high performance—not a distraction from it.

Something to reflect on:

Are you avoiding rest because you don’t value it…
or because it feels unfamiliar?

If this resonates, start small.

Even a few minutes of intentional pause can begin to change how you show up.

And over time, that changes everything.
