Hey Coach
“Hey Coach!” The beginning of every question i have ever gotten over the last decade. I thought it was time to log the answers.

Hey Coach “is it weird training with women?“
No. If it is you are the one making it weird. Some of my best training partners are female.
Women are often much more technical than men. You have to have weight and spacial awareness during training. I try not to use pressure or size to submit the person. Instead I try to use the opportunity to be “smaller” and JUST use technique. I often find big holes in my game when I am not trying to power through movements. Female team mates are a huge asset to the school and to training.
“What if the person is gay? Is that weird?”
Listen…..if these are the things that you are thinking about during class it’s probably why your jiujitsu is trash.
Worry about yourself and learning/refining your technique. Class should be about skill acquisition and development. Not a social experiment.

Hey Coach! Why do you still compete? Midlife crisis?
No. I am very satisfied with my life so no midlife crisis. This is just my own personal timeline. This is what it looks like to “not give up.” I wanted to be great and wanted to win these tournaments at the highest level. I quit a-lot of things and people to focus on my dreams. It took me until now to start having big successes. I’m just rolling with it and am really happy to finally be doing what I set out to do a long time ago. For whatever reason it is happening for me now in my 40s. I dont know if maybe I just didn’t get it or maybe I needed to learn some cosmic lessons first????? Perhaps I needed the right team/circumstances???
I’ll take it. How great of a feeling it has been. It would have been so sad to have given up all of the times I wanted to or maybe listened to negativity about being too old for this or to just stop already. I would have missed out on so much happiness.
Stay hungry, don’t listen to anyone except yourself, and go get yours!
