Meet the Utah woman helping people running from polygamy 05/20/2026

A huge thank you to Deseret News for taking the time to share the story behind Holding Out HELP and the work being done to support individuals leaving polygamous communities. We are especially grateful to Lee Benson for interviewing our Executive Director, Tonia Tewell, and to Tess Crowley for capturing these meaningful photos.

Thank you for helping bring awareness to the experiences, resilience, and hope of the individuals and families we serve.

Meet the Utah woman helping people running from polygamy Tonia Tewell started Holding Out HELP in 2009.

We are currently looking for a temporary host home (around 3 months) for a respectful, hard working male in his mid–late 20s who is working as he rebuilds stability and independence.

The ideal location would be in the Salt Lake Valley (Draper–Murray area).

At Holding Out HELP, we know that safe and supportive environments can make a life-changing difference during times of transition. Even opening your home for a short season can provide someone with the stability they need to move forward. 🤍

If you or someone you know may be interested in learning more, please message us or reach out at [email protected].

Mental health matters, every month, not just this one.

At Holding Out HELP, we know how heavy life can feel, especially when you’re navigating change, trauma, or starting over. You don’t have to carry it alone.

If you or someone you know needs support, these resources are available 24/7.

And if you come from a polygamous background and aren’t sure where to turn, we’re here for you too. 🤍
