In our After-School Reading Class, reading is not just about looking at words in books or on the screen, it is about understanding, experiencing, and making meaning through sign language. We read stories to our Deaf learners using clear and expressive sign language, making sure every detail is accessible and understood. After each story, we don’t stop there, we engage them with comprehension questions to help them think deeper, reflect, and connect ideas from the story to their own experiences.

One powerful moment came during our Story Dice activity with Prince Jhey. Using only simple picture tiles—a group of people, a document, a hair clip, an ice cream, and a bus—he created a full story in sign language. Through this, we saw not just storytelling, but understanding, imagination, and language in action.

This is what reading looks like for Deaf learners when language is accessible—it becomes alive, meaningful, and empowering.
