Think about the best leader you have ever worked for. What made them unforgettable?

Yesterday, Regina and I spoke at the Big I Michigan Insurance Agents Conference about listening in a virtual world.

Not fixing faster.
Not following a script.
Just listening between the lines.

Because when people feel heard, conversations settle and clarity follows.

Grateful for the opportunity and the room.

I noticed something in a conversation recently while we were buying a large screen TV.

There were a lot more factors involved than I expected.
Specs. Settings. Technologies I did not even know existed.

One salesperson had a lot to say.
Very knowledgeable.
So much information that most of it went over my head and left me more confused than clear.

The other salesperson was mostly quiet.
They listened to what we actually wanted.
And every so often, they would say something simple and thoughtful that made me pause.

Both were good at their jobs.
But the one who listened had the most magic.

It reminded me that leadership is not always seeing how much you know.
Sometimes it is knowing when to slow down so someone else can feel understood.

I am still thinking about that.

As I step into 2026, I am feeling very clear about the work I am here to do.
