The Uncertainty of Touring, Imposter Syndrome, and the Myth of “Fake It Till You Make It”

Touring is built on moving ground. Gigs vanish overnight. Dates shift. Budgets disappear. That instability becomes the backdrop for your entire career—and it’s where imposter syndrome thrives.

For decades, the mantra has been “Fake it till you make it.”
It’s catchy. It sounds empowering. And yes, there’s a grain of truth—sometimes you do have to step into a role before you feel ready. But the problem is how it’s applied:
• It teaches silence over curiosity.
• It rewards appearances over depth.
• It locks you into surface-level growth.

Tradition can preserve valuable lessons, but it can also calcify into complacency—a belief that surviving the way things are is the same as thriving.

If you want to last in this industry—mentally, physically, professionally—you can’t let that happen. You can’t get so comfortable in “how it’s done” that you stop building on it.

Even with decades in the game, you can still feel one mistake away from being “found out.” And when tradition and fake it till you make it overlap, it’s easy to get stuck maintaining the image instead of developing the skill.

If you want to last, you have to:
• Keep learning your craft.
• Push past your comfort zone.
• Question tradition without disrespecting it.
• Stay a student, even when you’re the teacher.

Because here’s the truth: there is no finish line where you’ve “made it” and the uncertainty disappears. Even at the top, you’re still one production change, health crisis, or industry shift away from starting over.

The goal isn’t to fake it until you’re safe—it’s to face it until you’re adaptable enough that chaos can’t take away your ability to show up, do the work, and keep growing.

The truth says: “Learn it till you become it—and keep learning after.”
