🇺🇸 250 years of America calls for red, white, blue... and Mahjong, of course. 🀄️
This year we’re celebrating with two very different Fourth of July tables:
✈️ A patriotic setup featuring my Blue Angels-inspired tiles from Mac + Miller Mahjong
💦 A poolside setup with the cutest waterproof mat and tiles from Rachel Dodd made for sunshine, splashes, and summer Mahjong.
Because if there’s one thing America does well, it’s gathering around a table with friends, making memories, and celebrating together.
Now we need to settle an important debate...
The Fourth of July question we didn’t know we needed:
🀄️ Traditional Mahj
or
💦 Pool Mahj

Tag your favorite Mahjong partner and share this with your 4th of July Mahj Group.
Happy 250th Birthday, America. ❤️🤍💙

One of the fastest ways to improve your Mahjong game?
Stop watching only your rack.
Start watching your opponents.
During the Charleston, players reveal more information than they realize.
Watch for these clues:
• Blind passing
• Stopping the Charleston early
• Negotiating the courtesy pass low
None of these guarantee a strong hand.
But they often signal confidence, direction, or a hand that’s developing quickly.
The best Mahjong players aren’t just reading the NMJL card.
They’re reading:
• The Charleston
• The exposures
• The discards
• The table
• Their opponents
Because Mahjong isn’t just a game of tiles.
It’s a game of information.
Keep an eye on those players.
They may have something building.
If you’re ready to improve your defensive play, learn to read the table, and become a more strategic player, we still have a few seats remaining for our October Soirée Retreat in Fairhope this October.

Can you change your mind about a discard?
The answer is yes... until one of two things happens:
• The tile is fully named.
• The tile touches the table.
Once either happens, the tile must be discarded.
Down is down, no take backs!
This rule becomes especially important during Joker swaps. If a player commits to a discard and then notices they could have joker swapped, they don’t get to take it back.
It may sting to lose a Joker once...
But you’ll probably not make that mistake again.
Save this one for your next Mahjong game.

One of the biggest mistakes I see players make?
Stopping the Charleston too early.
If you’re split between two hands with 6 or 7 tiles each, that’s usually a sign to keep passing—not stop.
The Charleston is your best opportunity to improve your hand before the game even begins.
If you still have 3 tiles to pass, keep the Charleston going.
Those additional passes can expose up to 12 more tiles and often provide the information you need to commit to your strongest hand.
My rule of thumb:
Don’t stop the Charleston unless you have approximately 11 tiles working toward one specific hand and truly don’t have 3 tiles left to pass.
Save this for your next game and comment CARD for more tips & tricks.

🃏 Mahjong strategy debate:
If you can redeem a Joker... should you do it even if you don’t need it?
I almost always say yes.
Why?
Because a Joker sitting in your rack can’t help anyone else—and if you don’t need it, it is the safest discard on the table.
I’d rather discard it myself than leave it available for another player to acquire and potentially complete their hand.
The counterargument? You might accidentally help someone complete a Jokerless hand, which means a larger payout.
For me, the first advantage usually outweighs the second—but like most things in Mahjong, it depends on the table and what you know about your opponents’ hands and the game in real time.
What’s your move?
👇
🃏 TAKE THE JOKER
or
🙅‍♀️ LEAVE THE JOKER
