MAWLANA SHAYKH HISHAM KABBANI: SAYYIDINA AL-HUSAYN ع THE LION

"Sayyidina al-Husayn ع was like a lion approaching Kufa. They told him to turn back, but he said, “No. I promised, and I cannot break my promise in front of Allah ﷻ. Whatever happens will happen. I am moving forward. If they want to kill me, I will be their intercessor on the Day of Judgment.”

He sent a message to Yazeed, saying, “My grandfather has power on the Day of Judgment. There can be no Husayn after me. I am the only Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ. Search the East and the West, can you find another Husayn?”

And likewise, no one can be his brother, Sayyidina al-Hasan ع.

So he said to Yazeed, “What will you do in front of the Prophet ﷺ if you kill me now? Tell me only that. I am coming here with my wife and my children. I am around fifty years of age. What do you expect my grandfather will say to you, O Yazeed? How will you stand in front of the Prophet ﷺ?”

Will the Prophet ﷺ look at him?

When Sayyidina Hamza ر was killed by Wahshi, and Wahshi later came and repented, the Prophet ﷺ accepted him into Islam. He accepted his repentance and his shahadah, but he did not turn his blessed face toward him.

So if someone kills his own grandson, what do you think the Prophet ﷺ will do?

That messenger came to Yazeed, and there are many narrations about this matter. Allah knows best what is in the hearts, but the actions were wrong. He sent ten thousand soldiers against seventy-two people.

Ten thousand soldiers against seventy-two, and those seventy-two were the family of Sayyidina al-Husayn ع.

Sayyidina al-Husayn ع asked for water for his children and grandchildren, but they did not give him even one drop. They killed his son, Ali al-Akbar, in front of his eyes.

Then they attacked Sayyidina al-Husayn ع and cut his blessed body into pieces. But they did not leave his head. They took his blessed head as a present to Yazeed, as a so-called gift.

Where are you, Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah?Ashura is an extremely significant day for all Muslims. They say in their masajid they are Ahl as-Sunnah wa 'l-Jama`ah, but they do not teach anything about Ashura and Sayyidina al-Husayn.

Every masjid must be doing that. They celebrate the beginning of the Hijrah year but not the death of Sayyidina al-Husayn. If you know that for Sayyidina al-Husayn that just to mention his name is enough to to come to Paradise. If you give food on that day, for Sayyidina al-Husayn, Allah will give you food in Paradise.

MAWLANA SHAYKH HISHAM KABBANI: SAYYIDINA AL-HUSAYN ع STOOD FOR TRUTH

Sayyidina al-Husayn ع was living in Madinah. As the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, many people loved him and saw him as the rightful leader. He received many letters from Sham and Kufa asking him to come and become khalifah of the believers. They wrote to him, saying, “You are the one who has the right to this.”

But Muawiyah, while still alive, passed authority to his son Yazid. After Muawiyah left dunya, Yazid was in Sham controlling the affairs of the Muslims. The people of Iraq continued calling Sayyidina al-Husayn ع, saying they would support him if he came.

Sayyidina al-Husayn ع sent his relative, Muslim ibn Aqeel ر, to Kufa to investigate whether the people were sincere. At first, Muslim ibn Aqeel ر found that they were truthful and ready to support Sayyidina al-Husayn ع, so he sent word: “Come, the people are ready for you.”

But the situation changed. Yazid sent Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad to govern Kufa. Ibn Ziyad pressured the tribal leaders, used money and threats, and turned the people against Sayyidina al-Husayn ع.

Muslim ibn Aqeel ر then sent another message warning Sayyidina al-Husayn ع not to come, because the people had turned against him. But Sayyidina al-Husayn ع had already given his word, and he would not break his promise.

He reached Karbala with only a small group, around 72 of his family and companions. Against them came thousands of soldiers. Sayyidina al-Husayn ع was asked to submit and give bayah to tyranny, but he refused.

He said in meaning: How can I give bayah to one who is unjust?

He did not fight for power. He stood for truth, honor, and the sanctity of the Prophet’s ﷺ family. He chose loyalty to Allah ﷻ over safety, and he fulfilled his promise even though it cost him his life.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

المؤمن اذا وعد وفى
Al-mumin idha waada wafaa.
“The believer, when he promises, fulfills his promise.”

Sayyidina al-Husayn ع fulfilled his promise.

The Prophet ﷺ loved Sayyidina al-Hasan ع and Sayyidina al-Husayn ع deeply. He carried them, kissed them, and showed mercy to them. When a man said, “I have ten children and I never kissed them,” the Prophet ﷺ replied:

من لا يرحم لا يرحم
Man la yarham la yurham.
“Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.”

And the Prophet ﷺ said about Sayyidina al-Husayn ع:

حسين مني وأنا من حسين، أحب الله من أحب حسينا، حسين سبط من الأسباط
Al-Husaynu minni wa ana min al-Husayn. Ahabb-Allahu man ahabba Husayna. Husayn sibtun min al-asbat.

“Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn. May Allah love whoever loves Husayn. Husayn is one of the noble grandsons.”

MAWLANA SHAYKH HISHAM KABBANI ق: KARBALA: MIRROR FOR THE UMMAH

Allah ﷻ said in Holy Qur’an:

“Say: I ask of you no reward for it except love for my near family.”
(Qur’an 42:23)

The Prophet ﷺ was not asking for dunya.
Not asking for wealth.
Not asking for position.

He asked only one thing:

Take care of my family. Love them. Protect them.

That is why Ahl al-Bayt are not ordinary. They carry the secret of Rasulullah ﷺ.

Sayyidina Hasan ع and Sayyidina Husayn ع, when they were children, used to climb on the back of the Prophet ﷺ while he was in sajdah.

And he would not raise his head. Sayyidatina Fatimah ع would come to pull them away, and he would say:

Leave them. Let them be.

Why?

Because he was pouring knowledge into their hearts.

Not with words.
With presence.
With direct reflection.
Heart to heart.

From childhood, they were carrying heavenly realities.

These were the two most beloved in the life of the Prophet ﷺ, especially as he never had sons of his own.

And look at what happened in Karbala. The same Ummah that was asked to love the family of Prophet …stood against them.

This is why Karbala is not history, it’s a mirror for our failure to understand the Reality of the Light of the Ahlul Bayt. We must remember them, because they gave their lives for us and just by loving them, we can reach Paradise.
