For us to be truly satisfied with a strip project, we need to remove about 90% of the existing stain on wash day. On this deck, we were able to remove roughly 75%, which is still a significant amount, but not enough to achieve the finish we expect for a transparent or semi-transparent application.
After discussing the options, the homeowner and I agreed that returning to a solid-color stain was the best solution. With proper preparation, application, and maintenance, this system should provide 5–7 years of protection with minimal upkeep.
A light cleaning every couple of years and occasional touch-ups as needed will help keep the deck looking great while protecting the wood from the elements. Sometimes the best restoration plan isn’t starting over completely—it’s choosing the right coating system for the condition of the wood and setting the homeowner up for long-term success.
