Thursday 6/26: Marvine Lakes was stunning! Two large mountain lakes, surrounded by towering mountains that rise from the beautiful green forests with towering red volcanic cliffs to their Flat Topped summits. We couldn’t help but soak in the ambiance and milk every minute we had to be in this place. So we enjoyed our slow morning or fishing, dice and card games, and we even cooked lunch before we started trekking toward the trailhead. The lazy morning was a welcomed change of pace and allowed us to relax throughout the morning. The trail that departed from the lakes was dusty and downhill. We shared it with a horse pack trip that was using horses and mules to do what we were doing with packs strapped to our backs and boots on our feet. As we dropped in elevation the temps rose and the sun beat down on us as the trail crossed the meadows strew in wildflowers. We were quickly hiking the final miles of our loop but soaking up every moment. We encountered a few water crossings that required us to take off our boots to wade the streams. The cold water rinsed our now sore, stinky, and filthy feet. It brought smiles to our faces as we enjoyed the cool water. Each crossing turned into a long break as we soaked in these final hours in the backcountry. Although we were close to the trailhead we would wait until tomorrow to leave this beautiful place. As we were about a mile from the trailhead we found our final camping spot for the trip. Serendipitously and slightly desperately (because we were tired from the insanely dusty trail and sun beating down on us all day) we found a site that sat on the bank of the Marvine Creek, complete with a fire ring and just enough prime flat spots for our groups’ tents. We each dipped in the river, cleansing the dust and renewing our spirits. We played games around the campfire, enjoyed some surprise snacks, and reveled in the experience we had all just shared. What an epic week!
