The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season has already seen 19 named storm days. That’s the 7th most on record through July 23 since 1851. The only years with more are 2008, 2005, 1933, 1916, 1901 and 1886, although it’s important to note that named storm days may historically be underestimated, especially prior to the “satellite era” (which began in 1966).

We’re approaching the point in the Atlantic Hurricane Season when activity begins to increase. This should keep things interesting, especially because the Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) are extremely warm. When SSTs are this warm we have a better chance of seeing “near coastal” storm development, so the Gulf of Mexico will need to be closely monitored for the rest of the season.

Currently, we continue to monitor a unnamed invest storm about 650 miles east of the Windward Islands, this storm still have a chance of brief development; however, by mid-week conditions become much less favorable. As for Don, the storm hit Hurricane status over the weekend, now back to a Tropical Storm, Don is the first Hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season. On average, the first Atlantic hurricane forms on August 11. Don will continue its long voyage into the North Atlantic towards the United Kingdom.
