A wild dolphin was captured soaring high above the ocean off the coast of Maui in a moment that quickly went viral.
Researchers identified it as a pantropical spotted dolphin — a species not usually known for extreme jumps. The leap was estimated at around 15 feet, making it an unusually high breach for its size.
Pantropical spotted dolphins typically grow to about 6–7 feet long and weigh around 250 pounds. While larger dolphin species can reach even greater heights, this kind of jump is less common for this species, which is why the moment stood out.
Dolphins leap for several reasons, including communication, play, navigation, and removing parasites. Capturing such a perfectly timed leap on camera is rare, especially in open ocean conditions.
The image gained attention not just for its height, but for how it seemed to freeze a split-second of pure motion — showing just how powerful and agile these animals can be.
