I’ve seen this so many times. Agency hires me to improve morale, passes me off to an LT that would rather kiss the chiefs ass than serve the employees that hold up the agency.

LT introduces me at briefing and when he leaves the room, people start rolling their eyes and mumbling under their breath.

Their chief is happy but, no one else is…

Hard to follow a leader you don’t respect isn’t it?

One of my favorite things about this conversation with Captain was that she shared how her parents raised her to believe every person matters. So whether she’s responding to a homicide or a noise complaint, she approaches every call as if that person is the most important person she’ll meet that day.

That reminded me of something we found in our wellness research.

When we surveyed more than 800 first responders, 103 reported having no adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) before the age of 18.

That’s incredible news.

We spend a lot of time talking about trauma, burnout, and the impact this career can have. But it’s equally important to recognize that many officers bring healthy relationships, secure attachments, empathy, and strong values into this profession—and those experiences shape the way they serve their communities.

Officers like Heather are proof that compassion and professionalism can exist together. Every call may not be life-changing to the officer, but it might be to the person who picked up the phone.
