I very much respect Joe Friel and have had the pleasure of meeting him and being trained by him! This article makes so much sense to me and it supports my focus for several of my athletes. I will say that headed into winter months for Canadian athletes there are challenges to doing a lot of easy miles on the bike. The trainer is such a productive tool for quality riding. That means though that most runs should be aerobic, and in the spring, when you can get outside you are patient and take the time to put in the miles it's tough to do in the winter. This is called "reverse periodization" although it's not really reverse if you're training for an Ironman! You need long workouts as you approach race day!
I'm getting off topic here:) The point is, easy workouts are incredibly important and now more than ever they should be the focus for the bulk of our training.
