RED SHOVELER (Spatula platalea). Easily recognized by its broad, “cuchera”-shaped bill, it’s one of 4 shoveler species worldwide—and among the 10 Spatula species. Inhabits shallow lakes, lagoons, and estuaries from Argentina to Chile. Drakes are reddish with pale cheeks and dark spots; females are mottled brown. Using their specialized bills, they filter seeds, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates from the water’s surface. Show me a marsh with lots of submerged aquatics and an abundance of tiny snails, and be sure that am on the look out for these beauties! Will feature the Cape Shoveler next. Stay tuned.
