In a well-known Yale study, researchers taught capuchin monkeys to use tokens as a form of currency. At first, everything went as expected the monkeys traded tokens for food, treats, and access to simple games inside the lab’s little “market.”

But then something surprising happened. A male handed a token to a female, and she allowed him special attention before walking away to spend the token on grapes. It became the first documented case of nonhuman primates using currency for social interaction completely on their own, without being taught.

The researchers were stunned. They set out to study basic economic behavior… and instead watched the monkeys replicate one of humanity’s oldest exchanges within minutes.
