House votes to end government shutdown

The United States House of Representatives returned to Washington, DC today to take up the measure passed by the US Senate to end the longest government shutdown in history.

The Republicans in the House used their slight majority to pass the legislation by a vote of 222-209. The bill does not include an extension of the ACA Healthcare subsidies sought by the Democratic party. However, legislation does include a process for a vote on the subsidies in December.

Since the version passed by the House of Representatives did not change any of the provisions of the Senate legislation the bill can proceed straight to the President’s desk for his signature.

The legislation is now headed to President Trump’s desk. President Trump is expected to sign the legislation ending the 43-day shutdown of the US Government. This legislation included a full year funding bills for Health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, and the Legislative Branch.

Congress will have to take up funding bills again in January to completely fund the government for the remaining departments not covered in this continuing resolution.

Although this would provide funding for all departments at the 2025 level, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced flight reductions will stay at the 6% level and would not increase to 10% that was slated to begin at the end of the week.

The FAA will evaluate safety issues and the return of traffic controllers to determine when flight levels will return to normal levels. No official word if the reduction will still be in effect during the Thanksgiving holiday travel season.
