Great opportunity for students of all ages!

As part of the celebration of Juneteenth this year, the South Shore Unity Council is inviting all students in grades Pre K-12 who live and/or attend school on the South Shore to share their views on the theme: "What does freedom mean to me?" Students are invited to participate in a competition where they can express or reflect on this through a work of visual or performance art, an essay or other written work. Students are invited to submit an essay, poem, a piece of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture – any medium of expression is welcome!), a video or original song or other performance to the Juneteenth committee.

To enter, please send your submission to [email protected] by Sunday, May 31, 2026. Please also use this email to contact us to arrange delivery or pickup for adjudication of any physical submissions as well. Please include your name, grade, school and contact information as part of the submission. Students are permitted to submit more than one entry if they desire.

There will be a winner from grades Pre K-2, one from grades 3-6 and one from 7-12. Each will receive a $50 gift card and the winning submission from each group will be announced at the South Shore Unity Council’s Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 19th from 4-7 pm at the Hingham Harbor Bandstand

HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY
Movie Screening and Discussion at First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Scituate
330 First Parish Rd, Scituate, MA
Saturday, March 21, 2026
6:00pm ET

Join us to watch and discuss this powerful documentary about the increasingly anti-trans tenor of mainstream media and the role it plays in anti-trans healthcare legislation.

HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY follows Chase Strangio, ACLU attorney and the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth (United States v. Skrmetti).

The film exposes the dangerous role of mainstream media in fueling anti-trans legislation, uncovering how biased coverage drives hate, endangers lives, and threatens democracy itself. With insights from journalists like Jelani Cobb, Lydia Polgreen, and Gina Chua, and activists like Laverne Cox, the story dismantles anti-trans disinformation and highlights its devastating real-world impact.
