The fire on High St. last weekend displaced at least 14 families and 3 businesses. One of the businesses is Hair Hunterz barbershop, one of our first bookshelf locations. Since our shelf has been in that spot we have collaborated on many community events with the owner, Frankie. From our first teach-in on the Young Lords after hours at the shop, to back-to-school backpacks for the kids and haircuts for our homeless community members, Frankie created a space not only to help the community, but also a place where the community learned to share our knowledge and recognize our own power to make positive change. Hair Hunterz had their 22nd anniversary this week as they cleared out the old spot and moved into 326 Appleton St. While moving stuff today, we discussed Frankie's plans to raise funds for the families that lost their homes and belongings (details coming soon). The space on Appleton and High had a lot of important memories for Holyoke, but we are grateful everyone made it out of the fire ok. We will continue to grow the community work that started there. Update with news of the next event coming soon!
