I want to send my condolences to the ʻohana of Aunty Irene Midel from Hilo as well as to Hilo and the State. Aunty passed away on Friday last week on March 27th 2026 at 97 years old. She was an inspiration to many for her effervescent spirit and joy-filled personality. I had the honor of running into her at a pre-Merrie Monarch event in Hilo in 2023. Her absence at Merrie Monarch this year will be immensely felt. I remember in meeting her that she struck me as someone who 'no fool around with her pua' which is a level of care which I am inspired to share in and persevere. She was widely regarded within community for her commitment to the preservation and advancement of Hawaiian culture. In 2024 Aunty retired after 55 years in the hospitality industry.
