This professor may have a solution to dreaded potholes.

University Professor Zhanping You has been conducting research to turn scrap tires into durable, sustainable asphalt and pavement chipseal. In Michigan, which produces approximately 10 million scrap tires annually, You and his team have 30 ongoing or complete projects across the state utilizing his innovative methods.

By working with local government agencies with feedback from community road users, You has positioned Michigan Tech Engineering as an important resource in making Michigan infrastructure more durable and sustainable. And the work has only just begun!

“If we keep going, we could use up all the tires in the country!” said You. “Or at least in Michigan.”
