I just received a flood insurance quote request from my website. This is a first for me. Even the robots know you get great customer service when you call Afloat!
Hurricane Beryl is a direct threat to our region, and I want my clients to be prepared in the event of a flood. A lot is said about the various hurricane preparation lists and supplies you need to weather a storm. Not a lot is shared about what to do after a storm. Standing in your living room with water up to your knees is too late to start asking questions. You are in panic mode, and once the water recedes your first instinct is to clean up everything and throw everything out. Do Not Do That. You do not want to make any decisions that will make processing your flood damage claim harder.
If you haven’t done so yet, go through your home room by room and take a photo or video inventory. Show your home as it looks with your décor and furniture before a flood comes through and floats things out of place. Document each piece of furniture, each electronic and its serial number. Take photos of your closets full of clothes and shoes. Take photos of your kitchen pantry and all your food. Document your medications lists. This will help you prepare your inventory list after a storm.
I have attached the Nation Flood Insurance Program Claim Handbook for you to review and familiarize yourself with. Pay attention to instructions starting on Pg 10. https://agents.floodsmart.gov/sites/default/files/fema-claims-handbook-04-2022.pdf
· Contact your agent as soon as possible.
· Separate your property by damaged and undamaged property. Move undamaged property to a save dry spot.
· Don’t discard anything before your adjuster sees it. If you must discard something because it poses a health hazard, take photographs documenting the flood damaged items before disposing. Be sure to keep samples of disposed carpet or wood floors.
· Make a list of damaged personal property.
· Document and throw away water-damaged food, including canned goods. (Pg 9)
· List and photograph any areas of structural damage you want to show your adjuster.
Please read the full booklet for complete details.
The next step is out to file a claim. The information you need to provide is simple.
• Your name
• Policy number
• Addresss
• Date of the flood
• Brief description of damage, for example 2 inches of water in my kitchen.
• A good cell phone number and email address for communication.
There are 3 ways to do it.
1) Call NFIP Directly: 1-800-638-6620 (you will need your policy number)
2) Call or text me, your agent.713-540-8778. If you call, and you get my voicemail, send a text message with your claim information.
3) Email me: [email protected]: include your claim information.
I will submit your claims in the order I receive them. Please limit your claim information to one source. It will slow me down if the same claim is reported via text and email.
