With the recent hot weather spells we've been asked a lot about things to do to keep the heat down in attics. This album is of an older house near the north loop in Houston we did a few years ago but it shows an essential first step in making sure cooler air can circulate into the attic: fully vented Hardie Soffit. Its only ten pictures so follow the captions on each one to get a sense of how and why soffits work.

Let's face it... roofs are boring. The overhangs (soffits) even more so. But if they are planned right, they can work together to ventilate and cool down your attic. We just finished a complete Hardie replacement in the area of West 18th and T C Jester (just west of the Heights) and we took some pictures specifically to illustrate how roofs and soffits can be made to work together to keep you from giving too much of your money away to the electric company. Guild Quality is the organization that contracts with the James Hardie Corporation to contact homeowners who have recently had Hardie products put on their home, and their main purpose is to find out how happy they are with the quality of service the installer gave them. Now that winter is over, you should be well on your way to starting your repair-remodeling projects. Its "spring forward" weekend, and as usually happens at the start of spring every year we are scheduling jobs weeks in advance.
