We all have different forms of learning, some learn visually, some learn by listening. It is important to understand how a person learns in order to teach them skills. At Meaningful Connections Behavior Solutions we conduct the necessary assessments so that our consumers can thrive!

Dr. Ivar Lovaas is most well known for his research on early behavior modification to teach children with autism through prompts, modeling, and positive reinforcement.

This year the holidays may be a little challenging and different than other years. Here are some tips for before and after Thanksgiving.

BEFORE THANKSGIVING:

Make visuals of the day and prepare social stories.

For some children, routine changes can be challenging. Creating a visual of why they are not going to school during a weekday, and why they have to prepare for a special occasion can help ease the transitions.

If family is visiting, prepare them and explain the things that your child enjoys and does not enjoy doing.

If you are visiting others, make sure you prepare a list of items to take such as extra clothes, sensory items, favorite toys and favorite foods.

THE DAY OF THANKSGIVING:

Consider keeping your child’s schedule as close as possible to any other regular day.

Prepare a special meal for your child if needed.

Do not force them to eat anything they do not want.

Take headphones if loud music is not ideal for your child.

If possible, sit at the end of the table next to your child so it is easier to leave the room without any interruptions or overwhelming him/her.

Designate a room for quiet time.

Always praise appropriate behavior.

And most importantly ENJOY your time with family!

Social cues and being able to recognize what others are feeling are some of the skills that can be taught with early intervention. Many kids with social skills issues have trouble picking up on social cues which can be associated with misunderstanding people and situations. These are some of the many skills that we teach our clients and their caregivers. Contact us today for more information!

Halloween night is around the corner! These are some tips so that you and your children can enjoy the day!

BEFORE HALLOWEEN:
-Use Halloween decorations around the home
-Try on costumes starting the days before. If they do not like them DO NOT make them wear it
-Make visuals that indicate where you are going and why
-Create social stories
-Practice knocking doors and grabbing candy
-Walk through your neighborhood and explain where you’ll be going

ON HALLOWEEN:
-Take extra clothes in case your child does not want to be in their costume anymore
-Go with someone that your child is comfortable with
-Try to maintain your child’s regular routine as close as possible
-Bring along items tailored to your child’s sensory needs such as noise blocking headphones, ear plugs, weighted vests, soft toys
-If your child communicates with PECS create cards that say things such as “Hi! My name is ____ I have autism. I cannot say trick or treat but I am really trying!”

ENJOY!
