I am a birth doula Liberty County and surrounding areas.

Do not ramp up in early labor, REST!

Respecting the work of early labor makes things more fun, more efficient, and more safe!

It can last a few minutes or a few days. It’s not usually super strenuous, though it can seem physically overwhelming, especially if it’s not understood. Labor is very rarely like TV, with babies out by the next commercial. Keep a great attitude, and prioritize rest. Generally, you’ll know you’re shifting into active labor when your contractions are coming every 5 minutes (or 4 if it’s your first), lasting a full minute, and this has been going on for an hour. Often called ‘5-1-1’ or ‘4-1-1’ pattern.

The length of labor is measured from this Active labor/~ 5 cm threshold. Until then, staying cheerful and doing what you would normally be doing is the way to go. Eat/walk/rest/bath or shower/laugh at a funny movie/make cookies with the kids/make memories. AND GO TO SLEEP OR AT LEAST REST if it’s dark! Strategize for needing to conserve your energy, said no parent ever, “I was too rested.”

You can protect this process by staying away from things that shut down melatonin, which also can affect the oxytocin for labor; this includes the blue lights of cell phones, TVs, and fluorescent lights like hospital corridors. This is ONE one of the reasons the first time parents often think they’re in labor with contractions, but they stop at the hospital. The more well established laborers, the more it will keep going.

If it does seem like the contraction might find their rhythm if the baby was a in better position - try the Reset Position. IT’s AMAZING. Can be done in every setting, anytime.
