ઘણા પરિવારોને ખબર નથી હોતી — hospice provider પસંદ કરવો એ કોઈ કાયમી contract નથી. જો team તમારા loved one ની જરૂરિયાતો — communication, ઝડપ, કે care ની ગુણવત્તામાં — પૂરી ન કરી શકે, તો provider બદલવાનો તમને પૂરો અધિકાર છે. એ બરાબર એવું જ છે જેમ તમે તમારા cardiologist કે primary care doctor ને બદલો છો. Hospice નો હેતુ તમારા પરિવારને comfort અને support આપવાનો છે — અને એમાં યોગ્ય fit શોધવાની સ્વતંત્રતા પણ સામેલ છે. શું તમારા પરિવારમાં ક્યારેય care provider બદલાયો છે?

One thing many families don’t realize: choosing a hospice provider is not a permanent contract. If the team you’ve chosen isn’t meeting your loved one’s needs — in communication, responsiveness, or care — you have every right to change providers. It’s no different than switching your cardiologist or your primary care doctor when something isn’t working. જ્યારે પરિવારના કોઈ સભ્યને hospice care ની જરૂર પડે, ત્યારે આપણે પહેલા star rating જોઈએ છીએ — કારણ કે એ સરખામણી કરવાનો સહેલો રસ્તો લાગે છે. પણ rating માત્ર અડધી વાત કહે છે. જે hospice કાલે જ આવીને તમારા loved one નું મૂલ્યાંકન કરી શકે, એ ઘણીવાર perfect rating ધરાવતા પણ બે અઠવાડિયાની રાહ જોવડાવતા hospice કરતાં વધુ સારી પસંદગી હોય છે. ઝડપ, communication, અને પહેલી મુલાકાતમાં team તમારા પરિવાર સાથે કેવો વ્યવહાર કરે છે — એ ઘણીવાર કોઈપણ rating કરતાં વધુ મહત્વનું હોય છે. તમે hospice પસંદ કરતી વખતે કયા સવાલો પૂછવાનું શીખ્યા?

મારા એક patient ની daughter એ મને phone કર્યો.
એમણે કહ્યું,
"મમ્મીને masala chai બહુ ગમતી. પણ stroke પછી એ પી શકતા નથી."
એ લોકો mouth swab થી મોં ભીનું રાખતા હતા.
મેં કહ્યું,
"તો થોડું chai swab પર લગાવીને જુઓ."
બીજા દિવસે એમનો phone આવ્યો.
એમણે કહ્યું,
"મમ્મી સ્મિત કરી."
એ નાનકડા સ્વાદે એમને ખુશી આપી.
અને મને લાગે છે કે એટલી જ ખુશી એમની daughter ને પણ થઈ.
ક્યારેક નાની વાતો પણ ઘણો ફરક પાડી જાય છે.
One of my patient's daughters called me and said,
"Mom loves masala chai, but since her stroke she can't swallow anymore."
They were already using mouth swabs to keep her mouth from getting dry.
I suggested trying a little masala chai on the swab.
The next day she called me back and said,
"My mom smiled."
That tiny taste of something familiar brought her joy.
And I think it meant just as much to her daughter.
Sometimes it's the little things.
