"Reach or Throw, Don't Go" is a critical water safety rule because a panicking, drowning swimmer can easily overpower and drag a rescuer underwater, turning one victim into two.

Why "Don't Go" (Don't Enter the Water):

Panic Danger: A drowning person is desperate, panicking, and acting on instinct, which means they will grab, climb on, and submerge anyone who comes near them, even if that person is a strong swimmer.

Prevent Multiple Victims: Jumping in often leads to rescuers becoming victims, sometimes resulting in multiple fatalities in a single incident.

Hidden Dangers: You may not be aware of strong currents, sudden drop-offs, or low temperatures that put you at immediate risk.
Why "Reach or Throw":

Safety First: Using a tool allows you to assist from the safety of land or a boat.

Reaching Assist: Use items like poles, oars, branches, or clothing to bridge the gap and pull them in, ensuring you stay low on your stomach to avoid being pulled in.

Throwing Assist: Throw anything that floats—a life ring, buoy, pool noodle, or cooler—to the person so they can gain buoyancy, reducing their panic and allowing them to float while you or others assist them to shore.

As always make sure you shout really loud for help if you see a swimmer in need of assistance!
