Leash training refresher:
The rule: πŸ‘‰ 🚫 No forward movement when puppy is pulling leash tight.
When puppy pulls forward and creates a tight leash:

1. πŸ›‘Stop! Be like a lamp post. No need to scold.

2. Trick, bait, say puppy’s name, pat your leg, whatever you need to do to get puppy back to you and to create some slack in the leash.

3. As soon as there is slack: πŸ‘‰ Praise or treat (or both) and move forward together. Yay!

πŸ’• Togetherness is the game.
It is a beautiful thing. 😊

🌟 Bonus positive reinforcement:
Once puppy creates slack U in the leash: Move forward together (quickly) to whatever was enticing your dog’s interest (flower, fire hydrant, person, etc).

This is the best reward for a slack U leash. Puppy learns they get what they want, when the leash is slack.

In the beginning, keep training sessions short and positive. Start in a place where there are not a lot of distractions, like driveway or backyard. Keep session short 5-10 minutes.

After a 3-4 sessions your puppy should start to understand what this leash game is about. Then move on to places with greater distractions.
πŸ‘‰ Keeps teaching sessions short and end on a happy note.

As long as human stays consistent, puppy should be walking on a loose leash easily very quickly.
