Florida Keys Reef Lights

Happy 146th anniversary to American Shoal! First lit on July 15, 1880, American Shoal Light was the last reef light built.
Except for the lantern room roof and some other minor changes, the iron pile tower at American Shoal follows the plans for Fowey Rocks Light. The light shone over the reef as an aid to navigation until 2015, when it was deactivated.

The original Garden Key (Tortugas Harbor) Lighthouse in the Dry Tortugas, a 65-foot-tall conical brick tower painted white, was completed in March 1826. But, because of a delay in transporting the first head keeper John Flaherty, a War of 1812 Veteran, and his wife, Rebecca, the light was not displayed until July 4th.
The lighthouse on Garden Key predated the construction of Fort Jefferson, which began in 1846. After being damaged in a hurricane in October 1873 the original free-standing brick tower was replaced by the present-day iron tower built atop the fortification walls. The new light was lit in April 1876 and the old tower was demolished. You can still see remains of the foundation on the grounds of Fort Jefferson.
