The brain is an interesting study. To really learn to use our brains we need to be challenging ourselves- reading, reasoning, figuring things out, finding connections, wondering, searching, experimenting, and pondering. And yet our modern world often seems built to lull us into complacency.

Mathematics can be seen in more forms than symbolic number systems.

True education requires retrieval skills. Roads must be created in the brain. As students grapple with ideas, make predictions, and find connections, those roads become highways. It is key for students to practice remembering information without looking at notes or textbooks.

Now, our schools are worked more or less upon aniseed drops - marks, prizes, scholarships, blue ribbons, all of which "stay the stomach" of the boy who does not get the knowledge that he needs. That is the point.. he needs knowledge as much as he needs bread and milk; and an abundant regular supply at short intervals of various knowledge is a constitutional necessity for the growing youth as well as for the curious child; and yet we stay his hunger pangs upon "aniseed drops." Growing up without a television and without computers and cell phones contributed greatly to my love of reading. Unfortunately my love of math did not become apparent until college. The schools did a great job of making math into lists to be memorized and formulas to be used without any mental engagement. It wasn't until college that I began to discover the "why" behind those formulas. Math became a living language.
