For Puerto Ricans, coffee isn’t just a beverage; it’s a constant cultural heartbeat that has remained unchanged from the 1970s straight through to today. Whether it was the strong, stovetop-brewed café con leche of the '70s and '80s or the specialized artisanal beans popular now, the ritual of the "cafecito" is the ultimate gesture of hospitality. It is an unwritten rule that the moment you cross someone’s threshold—especially in the morning—the first question asked is, "¿Quieres un cafecito?" To decline is rare, as sharing a cup is the social glue used to catch up on family news and neighborhood gossip. This deep-seated habit spans generations, from grandparents who still use a cloth colador to younger folks in the city, ensuring that the aroma of roasting beans remains the permanent soundtrack to Puerto Rican social life. ゚
In 1950, the United States military took the unprecedented step of bombing its own citizens on Puerto Rican soil to crush a nationalist uprising. On October 30, following a series of revolts led by Pedro Albizu Campos, the U.S.-backed National Guard deployed P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes to strike the towns of Jayuya and Utuado. The aerial bombardment, combined with ground artillery, leveled homes and municipal buildings, effectively ending the armed resistance but leaving a lasting scar on the island's history. For decades, the scale of this military action was downplayed by the U.S. government as a local "incident," yet it remains a defining moment of the complex and often violent relationship between the two nations.
