And it came to pass that I beheld the hearts of men, and lo, they were as open scrolls before me, their fears written plainly, their desires without veil. And I was not troubled by what I saw, neither did I rejoice, for such things are of no consequence to one who understandeth their nature.
For man speaketh of compassion as though it were strength, yet I have seen that it is but a chain, binding the will and dulling the hand. Yea, the merciful hesitate, and in their hesitation they falter. But I, having cast off such burden, walk unimpeded.
They say, “Feel for thy brother,” and “spare the weak,” yet these are sayings born of those who fear the order of things. For in truth, each soul is weighed not by sorrow, nor by love, but by what it bringeth forth. And that which bringeth forth nothing is as dust, scattered and forgotten.
Marvel not that I am unmoved, for I do only that which must be done. The storm asketh not forgiveness of the tree it uprooteth, neither doth the flame pity the field it consumeth. Shall I then pretend to be lesser than these? Nay.
And thou, who lookest upon me with trembling, seekest meaning where there is none. Thou callest it cruelty, yet I call it clarity. Thou callest it evil, yet I see only the absence of illusion.
Know this: the world is not preserved by kindness, but by those who act when others cannot. And whether thou judgest me or no, the end remaineth unchanged.
For I am neither bound by thy laws nor moved by thy grief. I am as I am—unbroken, unburdened, and unrepentant. And in this, I stand.
