This might go against what you’ve been told (and even what parts of the design industry tend to reinforce) but it’s something I believe wholeheartedly.
You don’t have to design your home to fit a common or universally desirable mold.
Most people start with good intentions. They want to make smart choices. They want to be practical, responsible, and forward‑thinking. Somewhere along the way, though, that mindset can quietly shift into designing for a future buyer instead of the person actually living there now.
Rather than imagining a hypothetical buyer five or ten years down the road, consider your current, everyday life.
How do you start your mornings? Where do you naturally gather? What helps you unwind at the end of the day? What colors bring you a sense of calm or joy? What textures and experiences make you feel comfortable and at ease?
Here’s a reminder worth grappling with: your home is your home. Whether you live there for five years or thirty, you are the one who is currently experiencing it every single day.
Your home holds the small, ordinary moments that make up real life; quiet mornings, busy evenings, celebrations, and rest. It should support the way you live now, not just the way it might someday be marketed to someone else.
Letting Go of the Pressure to Please Everyone
There’s a long‑standing belief that the safest design choice is neutrality — that if a home appeals to everyone, it’s the smartest path forward.
In reality, most buyers begin imagining changes the moment they walk through the door. They picture their own furniture, their own colors, their own routines.
So why not allow yourself to imagine you living there first?
A home doesn’t have to be blank to appeal to a wide range of people. It simply needs to be well designed — thoughtful, functional, and intentional.
When you stop designing for resale and start designing for living, your home becomes more than a checklist of spaces to to show on a listing someday. It becomes a place that reflects who you are and supports how you live.
And when the time eventually comes to move on, it can be someone else’s turn to walk in and imagine how they’ll make it their own. Just as you once did.
If you’re ready to turn your house into a home and stop planning around someone else’s taste, I’d love to help you get started. Reach out today to schedule a free consultation.

Why work with an Interior Designer?
Designing a home comes with a LOT of decisions. Big ones. Small ones. A thousand tiny ones that somehow all matter. My job is to take that weight off your shoulders and turn the process into something that actually feels enjoyable.
I put my clients first. Always.
Your home. Your time. Your money.
I treat all three with care and intention, and I see it as my responsibility to be a good steward of them.
Working with a designer means:
• You save time (no endless scrolling or second-guessing)
• You avoid costly mistakes
• You get a clear plan instead of overwhelm
• You stay on budget with guidance and priorities
• You end up with a cohesive, thoughtful space that truly feels like you.
You still get the final say. This is your home. I’m just here to guide, advocate, problem-solve, and make the journey smoother from start to finish.
Good design isn’t about being fancy. It’s about creating a home that supports your life—and enjoying the process along the way.
