Today, I wanted to share some knowledge about June 19th. On this day, african americans celebrate juneteenth. What is juneteenth? It's known as one of the oldest celebrations to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States.
On this date, June 19th, 1865 in Galveston Texas, the army announced that more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans were freed from slavery.
Even though the emancipation proclamation passed on January 1st, 1863 but slaveholders made no attempt to free enslaved African Americans in texas until nearly 2.5 years later with military intervention.
From that day forward, juneteenth is continuously celebrated by cities with black populations with parades, cookouts, family reunions, and other festivities. Juneteenth is the celebration of freedom. Where we come together as a community honor the freedom of ancestors and many others.
Juneteenth is still unknown to many Americans. I wanted to share a little history on this day. Comment below if you learned something new!
