DC Connect is proud to work with over 60 dedicated local partners to serve those in our community who need it most. Our goal is to provide a gateway to resources for those who are post-incarcerated, struggling with substance use, or experiencing homelessness.
Today we want to highlight our partnership with Smart Start of Davidson County. Think back to when you were a child: who helped you learn your ABC’s? Who encouraged you to keep trying? Who believed you before you believed in yourself? For many children in Davidson County, that strong start was made possible because of organizations like Smart Start of Davidson County. 📚👶
Since 1994, they have worked towards building stronger children and families, strengthening communities, and investing in the educators who shape our future. Their life-changing mission is to help every child enter school healthy, confident, and ready to learn.
Through early childhood programs, NC Pre-K Opportunities, parenting support, developmental screenings, early literacy programs, and school readiness initiatives, Smart Start works alongside families during the most important years of a child’s life. They invest in early childhood educators through training and professional development, helping children receive the highest quality care and education possible. Connecting families with the resources and opportunities they need makes a lasting impact not just on children, but on the future of the entire community. ❤️❤️

Today, we want to highlight our partnership with Family Services of Davidson County, Inc. In 1997, Davidson County Domestic Violence and Youth and Family Counseling Services merged, forming Family Services of Davidson County. For three decades, Family Services has provided vital support to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other crises. Through 24/7 crisis intervention, advocacy, prevention education, emergency shelter, counseling, and community outreach, they offer a forward path of hope and healing.
One of their temporary shelters is the Hattie Lee Burgess Home. The Hattie House provides hope, safety, and support to individuals and families fleeing domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking. Their services include a 24-hour crisis line, a safe, private location for individuals who need assistance with filing a protective order, court accompaniment, and a short-term emergency shelter where survivors can begin to heal. Their team is filled with highly compassionate people dedicated to empowering survivors, strengthening families, and connecting community members with the resources they need to thrive. One thing that makes The Hattie House especially unique is that it is one of the only pet-friendly domestic violence shelters in North Carolina, ensuring survivors never have to choose between their own safety and the safety of a beloved pet. They even have an office cat, Benny, who welcomes every visitor.
Beyond direct services, their team is passionate about prevention and education, providing training for first responders, schools, businesses, churches, and community organizations to help recognize abuse, respond compassionately, and build a safer community for everyone. If you or someone you know needs help, support is available 24 hours a day by calling (336) 243-1934.
