I’m running for Thurston PUD Commissioner to deliver to our customers clean efficient water services. I’ve been following the PUD since 2012 when I helped volunteer for the Thurston Public Power Initiative which would have allowed the PUD to go into electricity instead of water alone. That same year the current incumbent Commissioner won her seat backed by the same corporate funding that overwhelmed our grassroots initiative’s efforts. Corporations spent over $650,000+ to defeat us back then, which was multiples more than was ever spent on an election in Thurston. They backed my opponent again in 2018 with an independent PAC. Now she’s 80 years old running for her third 6 year term. I’m running after no one else stepped up, probably because they knew she’d get corporate money again, whatever she needed. I don’t think a foreign owned electric company should decide who becomes Commissioner of our local water utility, do you? Now, most people assume I’m going to try and have the PUD run an initiative again for public power. Well, I’m sorry to disappoint my friends, but times have changed and I no longer support the PUD going into electricity. Water is important and enough of a focus! 12 years ago, interest rates were incredibly low, the Federal dams could sell us energy cheaper, costs were much less and where energy would come from going forward was more reliable. Today, things are much different from the economic perspective and in the supply possibilities, so it no longer makes sense for the PUD to go into electricity. Not now, not in the next six years and maybe it’s just something that is better left for the state to work out. So I’m focused on water! We have a lot of work to do with concern for our water supplies, keeping it clean, dealing with updating old infrastructure and changing weather patterns. I’ll work really hard for you all and, with your vote, we can win!
