This bright yellow yarrow really stands out in the night landscape. A garden space can be enjoyed at night too, especially on the patio!

This transformation began last fall when we installed this patio and grill spot. Then we came back this spring for the planting. The homeowners wanted a low maintenance plan with variations of green throughout the garden. We custom cut the edge of the patio to give it a natural look like cottage flagstone.

As Native Plant Month comes to a close, one thing is clear 🌿

Native plants aren’t just a gardening choice—they’re the foundation of healthy ecosystems, resilient communities, and a livable future 🌎

Across the country, Wild Ones chapters and members are restoring native plants in yards, schools, parks, and public spaces—rebuilding the connections our landscapes need 🌱

This work doesn’t end in April.

Keep learning. Keep planting. Keep sharing.

Because a healthy planet starts with native plants.

Today I had a visitor I’ve been hoping to see for years — a Giant Swallowtail butterfly.

This is the largest butterfly in North America, and its caterpillars depend on plants in the citrus family. In Kentucky, their host plants include our native wafer ash (Ptelea trifoliata) and northern prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), and they will also use citrus plants grown in pots.

A few years ago, I grew a wafer ash from seed. I now have one planted in my yard and a few more growing in pots. And today, in the middle of a suburb… the butterfly found it.

I’ve never seen one here before, but I planted that tree with the hope that someday it would support wildlife.
And today, it was here laying eggs.

This is why native plants matter. 🌿

Amsonia with moss phlox, both nice native plants for early spring color.
