In Lincoln we donβt get many snows in October but it can happen. Most of our snow is in Dec, Jan and February. Itβs best to be ready for anything.
Here is a map of what happened 25 years ago on October 25-26, 1997. Heavy wet snow fell from south-central Nebraska to western Iowa. The highest total was 23 inches at Clay Center, NE. Lincoln had 13.2 inches, and Boys Town had 11 inches. The heavy snow fell on trees that still had foliage. That caused large tree limbs to snap off and fall.

I believe that every tree should get at least 10 minutes of attention every year. Makes for a nice tree that is more healthy, looks nice and more of a joy to live with. π
When to prune? Now.
For all trees late winter and early spring before bud break are the best times to prune https://nfs.unl.edu/publications/pruning-trees (comments below offer more info)
The goals of fruit-tree pruning are different from shade-tree pruning, but left unpruned they tend to produce small fruits and be structurally or physiologically stressed. UNL Extension guide for pruning fruit trees:https://extensionpublications.unl.edu/assets/pdf/ec1233.pdf
