Courtland Young, owner of Midtown Shopping Center, says he first learned about this yesterday because of flyers distributed by www.LACivicWatch.com.

According to Young, Metro never discussed this project with the property owners. He says this was also the first time Kroger’s general counsel and CVS leadership had heard about it. Young has since contacted representatives for Living Spaces and Bank of America as well, and says none of their leadership were aware of the project or the upcoming vote.

Young also explained that the low income housing north of Midtown was originally built to help people after the war, and that his family has made great efforts to serve and support that community. He says losing these businesses would be devastating not only for those residents, but for the entire surrounding area.

When the Rite Aid on Olympic closed, nearly all of those prescriptions were transferred to the CVS at Midtown, making it an even more critical resource for the community.

METRO IS ERASING OUR MEDICINE 💊🛑
The proposed K Line extension isn't just a transit project, it’s a healthcare crisis in the making for Mid-City. While communities like West Hollywood (only 1.9 sq miles!) enjoy 8 major grocery stores and a dozen pharmacies, Metro is voting to demolish a community's ONLY full-service grocery and drug store.

The Healthcare Reality: This CVS is not just a shop; it is a vital healthcare lifeline. After the local Rite Aid on Olympic closed, this pharmacy absorbed those prescriptions and remains one of the only providers in the area that accepts Medi-Cal. For seniors and low-income families who don't drive, losing this access would have "serious and lasting consequences".

The Discovery of the Lie: Metro claims to have been in "discussions" with these businesses, but we know the truth. The property owner and corporate leadership at Kroger and CVS only learned about this demolition on Tuesday because of flyers handed out by us! Metro was "dismissive" when confronted with this lack of engagement.

History is Watching: We are witnessing the "offensive history" of Sugar Hill repeat itself. Neighbors who were children when their families' homes were bulldozed for the 10 Freeway are being asked to face this nightmare twice.

Our Demand: As the longest-serving Mayor in West Hollywood history, Lindsey Horvath knows what a well-served community looks like. We demand that same respect for Mid-City. We support the subway, but we oppose the retail erasure of our historic Black community.

VOTE FOR EQUITY. MARCH 26, 2026. ✊🏾

West Hollywood has ~34,000 people, ~$88,026 per capita income, ~72% white residents, ~3.7% with children, 8 grocery stores, and numerous drug stores packed into just 1.9 square miles.

90019 has ~60,000 people, just ~$43,858 per capita income, only ~18–30% white residents, and ~35% households with children. This community has one grocery store and one drug store at Midtown Shopping Center. And now they want to take even that away.
That’s not equity. That’s retail erasure.

Two key voices recused. The longest-serving Mayor in West Hollywood history, Lindsey Horvath, is pushing hard for the K-Line extension, despite the minority community at risk of losing their only full-service grocery store and only drug store located in Midtown Shopping Center. This will devastate the entire community, making the historic minority neighborhood a food desert, and risk repeating the kind of harm seen in Sugar Hill.

With only 11 Metro Board members left eligible to vote, the question is no longer theoretical: Will this community receive fair consideration, or be sacrificed again?

Before anyone calls residents “NIMBYs,” watch these 4 facts.

West Hollywood already has abundant grocery and pharmacy access. La Fayette Square would lose its only full-service grocery store and nearby drug store. Metro cites Disney Hall, but leaves out the special protections and engineering Disney received. And for some families, this fight echoes Sugar Hill all over again.

This is bigger than one route. It is about fairness, honesty, history and who gets asked to sacrifice.

Watch, save and share.

“NIMBYs”?
La Fayette Square and the surrounding community are being asked to lose their only grocery store and only drug store.

West Hollywood is just 1.9 square miles, yet it already has at least 8 major grocery stores within city limits:
* Ralphs at 9040 Beverly and 1233 N La Brea
* Trader Joe’s at 8611 Santa Monica and 7310 Santa Monica
* Gelson’s at 8330 Santa Monica
* Whole Foods at 7871 Santa Monica
* Pavilions at 8969 Santa Monica
* Bristol Farms at 9039 Beverly

West Hollywood also has multiple pharmacy options, including CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy, West Knoll Pharmacy, Capitol Drugs, APLA Health Pharmacy, Curson Pharmacy, Fairfax Pharmacy, Spaulding Pharmacy, plus pharmacy services at Ralphs and Pavilions.

So let’s be honest about what is being asked here. West Hollywood residents have every right to want expanded subway access. But they do not get to dismiss La Fayette Square residents as irrational for defending their neighborhood.

The community is being asked to lose its immediate area’s only full service grocery store with bakery, deli, butcher, and full produce, along with its only nearby drug store, so a much better served community can gain even more convenience and access.

That is not equity.
That is not fairness.
And it should not be brushed aside as “anxiety.”

If Metro wants to talk about justice, then it needs to explain why a historic neighborhood with fewer essential resources is being asked to lose even more, while a far better served community demands more and calls residents unreasonable for objecting.

A historic Los Angeles community is sounding the alarm.

La Fayette Square residents are raising serious concerns about Metro’s proposed K Line Northern Extension and the unequal burden it places on a historic, predominantly African-American neighborhood.

This is not just about transit.
It is about equity, accountability, and whether Los Angeles is repeating a shameful history.

What residents are saying:

📍 Some current La Fayette Square homeowners were children in Sugar Hill when their families’ homes were taken and bulldozed for the 10 Freeway. That thriving Black community was erased. Now many fear Metro is once again targeting a historic Black neighborhood.

📍 Metro keeps pointing to its success tunneling under Walt Disney Concert Hall, but leaves out a critical fact: Disney Hall received extraordinary treatment, stricter noise protections, and specialized engineering. La Fayette Square’s 110+ year old homes are not being given that same level of protection.

📍 West Hollywood, just 1.9 square miles, already has abundant grocery stores and pharmacies. Meanwhile, Metro’s current plan would remove the only full-service grocery store and nearby drug store serving the immediate La Fayette Square area.

📍 Residents also argue the Draft EIR downplays or omits key concerns, including the neighborhood’s identity, its historic significance, and risks tied to underground water conditions that could affect foundations over time.

La Fayette Square residents are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for equal treatment.

If Disney Hall deserved special protection, why doesn’t a historic neighborhood that represents generational wealth, cultural heritage, and civil rights history deserve the same?
