The stain of slavery in NJ – once called the “slave state of the North” – lives on in
some of the worst racial disparities in America when it comes to wealth, health,
incarceration and schools.
In NJ, the median net worth for a white person is $103,5000 compared to just $4,900 for
a Black resident. The Black homeownership rate is 41%, compared to 77% for white
people. And a Black infant is three times more likely to die than a white infant.
The cracks of structural racism and oppression in our foundation were created by
structural and policy design, not individual behavior. They must therefore be repaired by
design. A Reparations Task Force can recommend strategic and achievable
investments in Black communities to achieve reparative justice. It’s time to Say the
Word Reparations and pass S386/A938.
