Meet Bernydia. She is my husbands great grandma. Though neither of us got to meet her in this life, I feel like a know her because she made sure to take, keep, and protect many precious photographs. She was born in 1898...not a lot of cameras just hanging around back then, and i know from her daughters stories, they had very little in the way of wealth. In fact, when she had to escape her abusive husband with her 3 little ones, they lived a good bit of their lives living in a tent in Arizona (can you even imagine!?!?) And yet, there are photographs. Many glorious photographs. I have portraits of her as a baby, teenager, and her as a young mom and grandma. And portraits of her children. And she taught her children to preserve the portraits as well. And we are forever grateful.
Take photographs today, and often!! Many glorious photographs! Preserve them, love them. Teach your family to love them.
I colorized this photo myself (a new passion of mine)! I love this portrait of Bernydia. This just screams young America. They were still adding states, and stars to the flag. She was 2nd generation American in her family. Despite her incredibly hard life, she was full of joy. And can't you just tell she loved America? So do we Bernydia!
I am so grateful for all the sacrifices made to make this the land of the free and the home of the brave. Happy Independence Day everyone!
