California Dreamin’, a New Year victory for the environment!
.
This week, San Diego became the largest city in California to ban styrofoam! Likely going into effect in April, the ban is a critical step forward toward protecting southern California coastlines, waterways and the marine environments.
.
Anyone who has spent a little time in the San Diego area can tell you that the amount of single use plastics and styrofoam takeout containers available at most restaurants in the city is staggering and incredibly shortsighted.
.
With the @pangeaseed Foundation team having hosted major ocean conservation themed street art projects in the greater San Diego | @visitsandiego area and working closely with concerned local creatives and community members, we witnessed firsthand the impact styrofoam is having in the city. Our team applauds the city’s latest efforts and we are ecstatic for the fantastic news. This is a step in the right direction, San Diego!
.
Styrofoam is one of the most harmful to the environment. Here are just some of the major problems with styrofoam:
.
Fewer than 1% of plastic foams can be recycled. ♻️ Although the technological exists to recycle the material, few facilities have the equipment.
.
Styrofoam can easily be blown from dumping sites in to drains and gutters where it eventually ends up in the ocean causing harm to an array of marine life. 🐠
.
It takes at least 500 years for styrofoam to break down! But even though it may be broken down in to smaller fragments, it never truly biodegrades and could be around for more than 1 million years! 😱
