Commissioner for Town of Matthews (NC)

;

I cannot speak for other electeds, but I do not get out enough to care for myself. Between my personal job and offical duties, I ignore myself. It’s not that I forget to do it. I just don’t do it.

Today I got out for a basic walk by myself with some music. Thank you, The Jam. It was 45 minutes of my day. That is doable.

Take care of yourself!

Today was a busy day driving to Raleigh for the teacher rally, and then quickly driving back to Matthews when I learned there was going to be a mini-rally here. I am proud to be a teacher and commissioner.

Keep Matthews for All! Kids Over Corporations!

I am posting this first as a high school teacher (Ardrey Kell currently and West Meck ‘26-‘27), and secondly as a town commissioner looking out for the school staff and educators of Matthews. North Carolina is almost 10 months without a budget. The impact is beyond a tragedy for public education. The state is already nearly last in per pupil spending and average teacher salaries.

May 1 is the time for those who support public education and want to send a message to our state lawmakers. Many school districts have redesignated it a teacher workday. Unfortunately, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has not, yet. This would ensure those who want to attend, but can’t because of a variety of reasons, may attend.

Come join us on May 1 in Raleigh. It is a fun time! I did it 2018 when I was in CMS communications. Thank you North Carolina Association of Educators AND Charlotte Mecklenburg Association of Educators - CMAE for all that you!

Believe the women and the girls! If you ask why they waited so long, that is why they wait or don’t tell anyone at all.

This needs to be acknowledged everyday, not just during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable calling 911, RAINN has several ways to reach them.

Leandro Case Reaction:

As an educator and town commissioner, I have thoughts about the North Carolina Supreme Court's dismissal of the Leandro case. I am the only educator on the Town of Matthews Board of Commissioners. This will affect Matthews!

My personal thought is that, once again, the State of North Carolina demonstrates that it cares nothing about the education system. The state ranks 49th in per-pupil spending. The Supreme Court's decision does nothing to alleviate this ranking or support for our students and educators. Rural schools will suffer from this decision.

"But Brian, you work at a very affluent high school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. You can get support from families."

Yes, that is true, but families should not be supporting our education system. I do still support my own class with certain supplies. It's a bad cycle, receive my paycheck and put it back into my classroom. And, what about those schools that do not have that support system? If you have not learned anything about me, I want everyone to thrive. Also, I never know where I may be due to realignments and staffing allotments. Don't get me started on that!

Those are some of my personal thoughts about the decision. Let's look at some of the important points from LEAD NC:

- With this decision, the Supreme Court justices sitting in downtown Raleigh decided that your zip code should determine your children’s opportunity to succeed — despite the constitutional promise that ALL North Carolina schoolchildren deserve a sound basic public education.

- With this decision, four Supreme Court Justices are making it clear they’d rather play politics with your lives than stand up for your rights.

- Rather than hold the legislature accountable for the failure to provide rural counties with the funding children need to succeed, they have chosen to rip away opportunities from children for partisan ends.

- Multiple courts have ruled that students are entitled to a sound basic education under the Constitution, yet the legislature has again and again failed to properly fund our schools. In this ruling, the Court is abandoning its responsibility to hold the legislature accountable and its responsibility to uphold our Constitution.

- The North Carolina Constitution requires that children, regardless of county, have access to a sound, basic, and uniform education - an opportunity that allows children of every North Carolinian to get the best start in life.

What is the path forward? A change needs to come to the NC Supreme Court and the NC General Assembly.

How is this accomplished locally? Vote for Ken McCool for NC! Also, re-elect Anita Earls to the NC Supreme Court!

Zip codes should not determine what kind of education a student will receive!

If you drive through the below areas of Matthews, please be aware of the new reduced speed limits!

Heads up, drivers — speed limits are changing.

Speed limits have been lowered to 35 mph on the following roads in Matthews:
McKee Road
Pleasant Plains Road
Weddington Road

With increased traffic and more people walking and biking nearby, these lower speeds are intended to improve safety and reduce crashes.

The changes have been approved, and NCDOT will install updated signs over time. Please drive carefully and stay alert for changing conditions.

Very important information for anyone traveling through downtown Matthews!

Resurfacing work on a portion of S. Trade Street is underway (from John Street to Fullwood Lane).

The project is being completed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, with work occurring overnight (9 p.m. – 5 a.m.) to reduce impacts to traffic. The main resurfacing is expected to take about two weeks, with final markings and minor adjustments to follow.

Thanks for your patience while improvements are underway.
