Sometimes culture has to change in deep and uncomfortable ways to take advantage of advances in technology. In small ways we feel the pull on a daily basis. What about even bigger changes? For example, here's a video of a typist operating a typewriter designed for the Chinese language. It's a complex language with no alphabet. It was and is difficult to make the language compatible with communication technology from the telegraph on. Language is a massive part of who you are and how you think individually and culturally. The language would have to change fundamentally in order to fit the technological framework, and as you can image, this is not something people want to do if they can avoid it.
