Pepe Mar’s solo exhibition El Gato Negro commissioned by THE BASS with support of Creative Capital opens March 18, 2027. The exhibition will be presented in the museum’s recently renovated historic rotunda building designed by Albert Vrana. The exhibition is curated by the museum’s associate curator Jasa McKenzie.

Mar is one of 13 visual artists throughout the nation who have received a prestigious 2026 Creative Capital Award. He will receive the maximum prize amount of $50,000.

The Creative Capital Award is recognized for funding boundary-pushing artists working across a wide range of disciplines and for identifying and supporting talent at catalytic moments in artists’ lives. As the only national open-call grant program dedicated to funding the creation of new work in every discipline, Creative Capital supports artists working in visual arts, performing arts, film, literature, technology, multidisciplinary, and socially engaged forms through a rigorous, external, multidisciplinary review process. The awards will support the creation of 49 new works across visual arts, film, dance, theater, music/jazz, and literature, as well as technology-based, multidisciplinary, and socially engaged practices.

David Castillo presents ‘The Majesty of the Elemental’, a group exhibition of gallery artists concerning the monument- that landmark meant to both preserve and evoke memory.

The works here are monumental not for their size but rather their narrative power. Studio Lenca’s Historiantes, Pepe Mar’s q***r narratives, Belkis Ayón’s depictions of the Abakuá, Sanford Biggers’ future ethnographies, Quisqueya Henríquez’s conceptual reflections on Latin American modernist art: each artist tends to and draws from the histories inherent in their work. The monument here is legacy, and the way legacy might be contained in process and a resulting vision.

On view June 11 - August 29, 2026.

David Castillo is pleased to announce and are included in Denniston Hill’s presentation at the 61st Venice Biennale .art.biennale curated by the team of the late curator Koyo Kouoh, In Minor Keys, on view in the historic Giardini from 9th May to 22nd November 2026.

In Minor Keys is an invitation to tune into the subtler emotional frequencies made possible by the arts, including music and poetry. The theme aims to provide a radical reconnection with art’s natural habitat and role in society, that of the sensory, the effective, the subjective.
